DillDish is a rotating meal plan system that minimizes leftovers (unless you choose to scale up to keep your fridge stocked for families that enjoy reheating leftovers!), maximizes a balanced diet with dinners that include all five major food groups, and helps the designated cook in the family keep their sanity by planning meals, grocery lists, and the pantry stock of food items with long shelf lives to make dinner as easy as possible without sacrificing flavor.

Keeping about 20 meals on rotation rather than constantly searching for new, interesting dinner ideas minimizes your mental exhaustion because these recipes will become familiar to you and the more you follow DillDish, the easier it will be to cook the dinners each week.

At the same time, having a full 20 varied meals on rotation means that the flavors never get boring. The DillDish rotation is tastier than keeping the same spaghetti, chicken nuggets, cold cuts, and carryout on repeat (which is what we tended to do before we put DillDish into practice!)

At the same time, planning for five dinners a week rather than seven leaves you room to carry-out a favorite meal once a week, or triple a recipe to enjoy leftovers for a few extra nights of prep-free dining. (I included my pick of the best recipe to reheat each week, along with tips to make the meal taste fresh and new even if it’s just reheated from the fridge!) We don’t love leftovers in my house. Actually, we tend to stow leftovers away just to ignore them night after night until we finally admit defeat and set them out on the curb at the next trash pickup day. Understanding this, I picked meals that are easy to refresh for a second, or even third, night during the week.

Having a core set of meals means it’s much easier to keep the pantry, fridge, and freezer stocked with ingredients that have a long shelf life, so they’re ready to go whenever you’re ready to cook. While I experimented with minimizing grocery shopping as part of the DillDish process, I realized that a lot of households already keep an unofficial pantry and fridge stock of frequently used items, even if it’s subconsciously for some. Most of us have go-to snack foods and grab-and-go items we gravitate towards at the grocery store (or while scrolling Instacart). Making it official and consciously working towards keeping certain ingredients on hand minimizes grocery shopping even more, which only serves to further expedite the dinner planning process, with the added benefit of minimizing your grocery bill.

  • Less mental energy devoted to meal planning and grocery shopping
  • Fewer leftovers to eat if your family does not like leftovers
  • Easy recipe scaling to create more leftovers if your family loves reheating
  • Maximizing flavors by using a few fresh ingredients in every dish
  • So much variety that rotating through four weeks of this plan doesn’t taste boring
  • Meals balanced with all five major food groups, including a few “hidden” vegetables
  • Less money wasted on unused food because you’ll stock only what you will use
  • An organized pantry and fridge that making cooking easier
